A Polychromatic Event
A city in Luzon, Philippines called Vigan City is home to various big and enjoyable festivals, such as Longganisa festival commonly held in the city's fiesta (25th of January), the Raniag Festival commonly held in celebration for the dead and Halloween, and the Binatbatan Festival or the Festival of Arts commonly held in the first week of may. In this blog we delve deep in the concept of the Binatbatan Festival of Vigan and i will try my best to elaborate as much information i can squeeze out from my mind. Without further ado, lets begin.
The days of the Binatbatan Festival is said to be as colorful as the rainbows from the above, it can be described as this because these days are said to give significance and utmost importance to the influence of the Spaniard colonists to our city, mainly the ancestral houses of Vigan and the abel cloth. The weeklong festival is clustered with different engaging activities for locals and tourists alike to enjoy. One of them being being the amazing heritage race and the infamous street dance showdown where competitors utilize abel costumes and groove elegantly to panagbatbat dances, this is one way to showcase the outstanding beauty of Vigan's woven cloth, the abel. The term "binatbatan" was gathered from the iloko term "batbatin", which can be defined as the seperation of cotton balls from the local fruit tree kapas sanglay, these cotton balls are spun and are used in the process to create abel, which we know very well and love.
In the end, the festival defines the passion and pride of biguenos, from our prowess in dancing to the showcase of out talented weavers, from the undying pride of us to our ancestral homes, from the passion we hold in showcasing our traditions and cultures, we are proud to be a bigueno.
